A Wine, Food, Wine! event not to trust. Intrigue abounds as attendees work together--temporarily--to rank the prices of blindly tasted but traditionally delicious white, rosé and red Rhône wine styles. Will the Syrah of the Northern Rhône win the day, or will only the southerly kingdom of Chateauneuf-du-Pape remain standing? Never fear, there are no losers this evening, when the only goal is to have fun and taste the wine & food of a classic French wine region. No amethyst hairnets allowed!
The heirs to the Rhône kingdom unexpectedly survived the treacherous evening--at least wine helps to calm the nerves. And blindly tasted, the crowd favorites were... the value selections!
The Rhône's classic white grape, but from a Mediterranean producer: Les Jamelles Viognier (Steinfels, 11.60 chf) paired with the equally Mediterranean seafood stew.
The absolutely everyday-available red Côtes-du-Rhône 'Belleruche' from M. Chapoutier (COOP, 8.90 chf) went down all too easily with herb-crusted lamb.
