Pop, Pop, Fizz, Fizz! - The World of Sparkling Wine
It’s a celebratory time of year and as 2013 runs low on steam, what better way to temporarily forget how many Christmas presents still need buying than a tour through the world of sparkling wine? It’s a continental and international array of flying corks as you’ll sample sparklers from Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and more. And oh yes, another country too, hm… perhaps France?! And if you weren’t already aware, sparkling is the consummate food wine, a great match for anything salty, rich, creamy, crispy or buttery. We’ll make sure to demonstrate!
With corks flying, our first-ever sparkling-only event was a hit (and nobody got hit). With bubbles from Italy, Spain, South Africa and (where else?) Champagne in styles from fresh fruity to yeasty vintage, crowd standouts included:
- An upscale, not-your-typical Prosecco Superiore Brut-style from La Farra (Weinbroker, 19.00 chf) paired marvelously with a selection of special Italian cheeses of the creamy and salty varieties.
- The Preis-Leistnugs-Verhältnis (a favorite long German word meaning “value for money”) performers were Nelson & Barack’s favorite South African Graham Beck Rosé along with a vintage 2005 Cattier Champagne (Weinbroker, 22.50 and 49.00 chf, respectively). Both dynamite with the night's sophisticated fatty food offering, Pigs in a Blanket!
