Australia took the wine world by storm with great-value, easy-to-like white and red wines: bold and outgoing, yet with an internationally-friendly character (ahem, that’s the wines we’re describing, perhaps somehow mirroring the national personality??). Aussie wine remains a trendsetter, from ever-popular Shiraz and big red “GSMs” to fresh white blends (the opposite of 90’s oaky Chardonnays), “stickies” and more. The selection is as large as a continent but not always easy to find in Switzerland.

Had a bouncing good time last night trying the full range of Aussie wines. No Chardonnays in the lineup and practically a different favorite from everyone, but consensus on the food:

  • The oft-unknown but always delightful grape Viognier from Kangarilla Road (Red and White, 19.00 chf) with grilled ginger prawns and apricot.

  • You don’t find it in Switzerland every day, but the seared kangaroo filet with carrot orange purée and cherry balsamic reduction paired beautifully with the velvety red ‘Moonlight Run’ GSM blend from Massena (Red and White, 28.00 chf).
